Biography

In retirement in COGOLIN since June 2002. Self-educated painter, I paint with the oil and pricipalement with the poppyseed oil, but also painter in watercolours and pastellist. I carry out landscapes, marines, portraits of people and animals. I take part in various workshops to improve me in various techniques. I draw and paint especially since the retirement bus before my occupation left me only very few pleisures. I am very attracted since 1964 by the luminosity and the colors of the South and mainly by those of the coast from Théoule to Cavalaire, without neglecting for that the other coasts of the "maritime Alps" to the "mouths of the Rhone". I can also carry out tables on request, while working on photograph, for réliser the work which you wish and who will be single, that is a portrait, an animal, an object or a landscape. For that, ask me a price quotation and a realisation time.

VAR MATIN - Agust 2005

COGOLIN - THE BEAUTIFUL HISTORY OF THE ABBEY OF THE THORONET
Jean Guyou was born in 1943. It is the downward one of an old Burgundian family originating in Auxerrois since XVIIéme century.
Parallel to a career related to accountancy, it was interested in painting, the Romanesque art, fishing at sea, inter alia.
Here it is Cogolinois integrated well into the local life within the Communal Committee of Fires of Forests. Since 1965 its love for Provence and more especially for the VAr, made him discover many places and splendid sites. Currently to the retirement it leads various activities.
A specific research concerning the abbey of Thoronet wonder of the Romanesque art and acoustics was the object first book, on the topic of the design of an abbey. A reference document which aims at sensitizing the public on the architectural richness of this marvellous abbey.
A shared step more than of others, the abbey of Thoronet, if modest in the beginning, became this bench mark, like main thing even of the order and art cistercian, symbol of a completely interiorized spirituality and perfect expression of a "functional" architecture to so modern resonances. "What could be more enthralling than to devote to him of its time, than one is a researcher, historian or writer, It is the personal step of Jean Guyou, and it can make it divide". Thus expresses Joelle Barthez, administrator of the abbeys of Silvacane and Thoronet, in préface it of the second book of Jean Guyou "Thoronet, birth, life, decline and resurrection".
The abbey was thus founded of alive of Saint-Bernard, in the first years of life of the time cistercian. As all the cistercians abbeys that of Thoronet would be dedicated to Marie. The site chosen in a field offered by the count Raimond-Béranger is very isolated in the medium from the forests. On this place one finds two rivers, a source and an underground river. The place chosen with hillside obliged a design of the work on several levels.
The church occupying the point more raised, is it even built on two levels. The rock is higher bathonien (limestone benches). Its quality is not exceptional, but it has the advantage of being on the site of the future construction. The first part of this book comes to supplement the preceding study, One includes understands better the control of work of this construction of XIIème in XIIIéme century. The second part relates to the history of this monastery from its construction to the recent restoration. The author does not forget to evoke the exceptional sonority of this abbey. The author attaches also a great importance to the description of the site and the evocation of symbolism, significant part of the Community and liturgical life of the monks. A reading to be deprived under any pretext.

Self-educated Artist-painter, it always improves his drawing in various workshops near other artist-painters. The watercolour, the pastel, oil belong to the techniques that the artist approaches. In its step Jean GUYOU wants to extend his thèmatique as much as possible. All the subjects inspire it as well bus the navy, the landscapes, the scenes of kinds, the portraits and the animals are treated with an equal enthusiasm. Even if if sometimes some imperfections appear in its artistic work, the plastics technician benefits a very good from his capacity with transcander the chromatic range what enables him to exploit the decorative effects that its expression has by also using its direction aïgu the imaginary one. A plastics technician who presents a writing which sticks to the daily newspaper and which became an element of life essential to its blooming since its retirement. It took part in several exposures and salt where it was rewarded and prepares a personal exposure from the 20 to September 26 to the Holy Michael of ROQUEBRUNE-sur-ARGENS. Opinion to the art lovers.

I work according to photographs. Indeed that enables me to work a subject with colors and a lighting which remains constant. During a work on the site the light varies according to hours' of the day and from one day to another, that is controlled by the photograph.

Then before beginning painting I carry out on the support a drawing with the pencil which will be most precise possible. For me this one must be neatest possible. If in the oil-base paints and the pastels it disapear under the matter, it can become a part integrated in the watercolours.

Then I attach much importance to the realization of work while trying to give him a lighting and an optimal luminosity, such as one can note them in Provence by a beautiful sunny day. For the navy I try to restore the movements, the colors, the feelings perceived at the time of days of fishing on the open sea.

Côté Arts - first quarter 2005

Self-educated painter, Jean GUYOU devotes his retirement to painting and devotes himself with happiness to the watercolour and the pastel, like with oil. Impassioned by the light of the South, installed with Cogolin in the VAr, the artist takes part in various workshops. II is filled with enthusiasm for the topics animaliers where it excels with the pastel, as for the bright landscapes of light to oil. But it is in the marines that it finds its topic of favourite. To the watercolour, it manages miraculousement to give again life with the old sailing ships drawing up with majestic on the floods their proud outlines. Jean GUYOU succeeds in returning the impression of movement with a great accuracy: the wind digs the waves and makes spout out scum and one believes to see with far the veils inflating and the "three-masted ships" gîter. Elsewhere, it is the fascination produced by the elements in fury which carries the imagination of the painter. The storm surprises the boat and one is taken in the tulmute of the floods, almost seized by fear. Although registered in a completely different style, the construction of the table is connected with that of the famous print of Hokusaï combing the boats of the old sailing ships fixed on gigantic waves. To through a very personal work, been useful by a technique of the extremely well controlled watercolour, Jean GUYOU transports us in a world impresses at the same time realism and of an imaginary dimension, which is the dream and the achievement of any artist.
