First in a series of tree paintings; Set against an ominous sky this lone Loquat tree stands in a green field bearing fruit. Juicy delicious fruit. A young boy dressed in red t-shirt and blue shorts is leaping up to pull some of the trees bounty off for himself. There is a certain freedom and joy to what the boy is doing, and accentuated by the fact the tree is in an open field where anyone is free to enjoy the act of eating fresh fruit from a tree.
Painted in strong brush strokes the sky, though grey omits a light strong enough to make distinct shadows back lighting the boy and the tree. In the distance is one other tree alone on the hillside. The inspiration for this painting was sitting in my yard in Portugal looking at the fruit on my Loquat tree and remembering my days in Africa when walking through the fields and coming upon a Loquat tree and refreshing myself with it’s succulent fruit, the memory of the sweet / tart nectar on a hot dry summers day refreshing me until I reached home.
Nostalgic and lyrical this large canvas always surprises viewers and evokes sweet memories of their own.
Inserted is a detail of the Loquat Botanical pedigree. The leaves, with fruit, a cross section of the fruit and the flower along with it’s botanical name Eriobotrya japonica. For me this was a deserving tribute to the Loquat Tree.
