A plastic artist, restorer and university professor, Fernando Barreto was born in Araxá, Minas Gerais, on September 23, 1929. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and majored in Conservation and Restoration Of works of art at the Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique - IRPA in Brussels.

He holds a degree in Art at UFRJ and at the Federal University of Pernambuco - UFPE. At Universidade Federal Fluminense - UFF, he was Director of the Institute of Art and Social Communication and implemented the discipline of restoration and conservation. In Brasília, as professor and director of the Central Institute of Arts of the University of Brasília - UnB, he also implemented the same discipline.

In both Recife and Rio de Janeiro, he maintained a laboratory for the restoration of works of art, attending collectors, museums and the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), with important restorations in churches, sacred collections and the Teatro Amazonas.

After his retirement in 1980, he devoted himself exclusively to painting and drawing, in an atelier in Rio de Janeiro and in Brasília, until his death on September 13, 2014.

In painting, he had a preference for thematic series, alternating between the symbolic research of human characters, the urban or rural landscape and the conceptual concrete, explored in the techniques of oil painting, dry tempera and wood, drawing and computer art .

He participated in several collective exhibitions and held individual exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. Its name is an entry in dictionaries of plastic arts and its works are present in public collections and private collections.
