The great Australian bush fires of 2020. The painting was painted because we have experienced some stormy weather on the mountain where we live. Our few animals will be locked up in their animal house when the sky turns dark green. Hailstones as big as eggs have fallen, destroying plants and ripping apart anything that is not strong enough. However, bush fires are a different thing altogether, what can withstand natures fury. Here a farmer and his dog are bringing in their few cows and small flock of sheep. An old tree has already been blown over in the foreground. and the eerie gloomy red light that still shining through the thickening fire storm clouds made the tall trees look like ghosts against the background sky.

Jos Kivits is a contemporary painter based in Australia. Kivits paints outstanding Neo-Classical Romantic landscapes and rich still life’s in the style of Dutch and Flemish masters from the 16th and 17th century.

His artistic expression is shown through realistic still-lifes, florals, and seascapes, all of which are inspired by the old masters. Kivits makes his own oils, which go together with his multi-layer technique, creating the sense of depth and a 'trompe l'oeil' look.

Jos Kivits was born in 1945, in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. His works are in public and private collections in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, North and South America, the United Kingdom, Europe and South Africa.
