Ces marchands ambulants, que l’on trouvait souvent installés sous des portes cochères de la rue Vieux, savaient sortir de leurs paniers le remède miracle qu’ils emballaient, d’un tour de main, en confectionnant un cornet en papier journal. Après avoir servi les épices, ostensiblement exposés, il avait l’art de glisser discrètement entre les mains quémandeuses des femmes des encens magiques qui éloigneraient d’elles le mauvais œil et des filtres d'amour au pouvoir mystérieux .
