Three layers of plaster bandages over a wire mesh on top of a stretcher frame.
„ThreeViews“ technique.
This plaster-relief artwork reminds me of a hilly landscape. The contour shows a structure like waves.
The front view does not disclose why that title was chosen.
This object was painted with one colour and then with different colours from left and right using resin sprays.
Some colours can only be seen from the front, predominatly in the valleys of the second layer and different colours from from the right and the left hand side („ThreeViews“-technique).
The blue coulour of this object can only be seen from the front perspective. From the left hand side the artwork shows two colours. First red and then yellow.
From the right hand side there are also two different colours visible. First white and then green.
So, these are the colours of the seasons in middle Europe:
Starting from left you have
white - the winter with ice and snow
green - The spring, where the leaves come out
and then we look from the right side and we see
red - the hot summer with the high temperatures
yellow - The autumn changes the colour of the leaves to beutiful yellow
So that is why this title was chosen for this object: A Year with 4 Seasons.
This artwork can be displayed stand alone, but can also be combined with "The Change of the Seasons 2", allowing you to see all four seasons when you look either form right or left.

Dieter List is a contemporary German sculptor. He works with plaster bandages, with two different techniques. First one is the "ThreeViews" technique, where the plaster bandages are processed wet and hardened on drying, so they become very firm. After that he gives them strong contours and attaches them to stretcher bars. The result is expressive relief, and the viewer, depending on the location and depending on the lighting, receives different color experiences.
Second one is the "Pure" technique, where the plaster is smoothed so that it gets a leveled surface. The created bodies are more reminiscent of spaces, of architecture, and are clearer and stricter in their effect than the "ThreeViews" objects.
Dieter List was born in 1959, in Hamburg, Germany.
