Didier Hamey was born in 1962 in Dunkirk where he grew up. He likes to quote his origins and one cannot help thinking, seeing his work, at the moment of madness that takes hold of this city of sailors during «Carnival», that he never misses.
Collector of small fragile treasures, he assembles and diverts to compose works marked by sharing and fantasy around nature.
From long moments spent in his grandmother’s garden looking at insects and plants, he keeps the taste of walks and observations in nature: he has always collected «plant objects» in the forest, snails and «things» of the sea, which are also an important source of inspiration for him.
Very early on, his parents trusted him and enrolled him at sixteen in an art school in Belgium where some teachers, passionate characters, introduced him to art. After an experience in the pub world, he entered the Beaux Arts de Paris. It was there, in 1988, in a workshop of large-format drawings that he took this frantic desire to hack everything he found and leave his mark. For its incisive feature, the simplest tools are the best.
His work appears in many private and public collections: the Fond National d'Art Contemporain, the Bibliothèque Nationale, the Musée de la Gravure de Gravelines. He regularly exhibits abroad: Germany, Hong Kong, Spain and USA.
He was in residence at Casa de Velasquez in Madrid 2015.
