This spring it rained for three months. A fact quite unusual for my country, and of course climate change has to do with it. The first clear day I went for a walk in the woods. As I advanced, a silvery mist parted, revealing these orchids, soaring and beautiful as fairies.
In orchids, male and female reproductive organs are merged into a single structure called the gynostemium. I decided, therefore, to allude to the theme of hermaphroditism, populating them with hermaphrodite terrestrial molluscs and the stick insect, Clonopsis gallica, of which no male has ever been observed. Females reproduce alone through parthenogenesis.
Orchids are peculiar plants. And beautiful. People often pick them up without thinking that a single plant can take up to three or four years to bloom, and the seeds germinate only on ground where a specific fungus proliferates.
In many European countries they are near-threatened.

Cinzia Marotta is a nature oil painter living and working in Umbria, Italy. Her realistic, but somewhat magical style is grounded by hard research and a scientific approach, aimed at capturing the mysterious, dark side of a natural world in stark contrast to an anthropocentric vision of our reality and culture.
As a teen, she studied in the atelier of famous Italian painter Pietro Sabatini, but then life took on a different path. After twenty years as an AD in a small company, she dropped everything to return to her art.
