Mayan mythology and their pantheon has always held my hearth high. This is a painting freely inspired on the stone carving of a Yaxchilan Lintel from the late classic period. This is one of a series of three panels commissioned by Bird Jaguar IV for the left (S-E) doorway of the central chamber. The lintel shows one of Bird Jaguar's wives, Lady Wak Tuun, during a bloodletting rite. She is carrying a basket with the items used for auto-sacrifice: a stingray spine, a thin cord and bloodied paper with which she will puncture the tongue to give her blood. The Vision Serpent awaits before her, appearing from a ceramic plate, which contains strips of bloodied bark-paper.
