I was born in Cape Town, South Africa in the midst of the apartheid era. Life was a daily challenge and I was forced to become strong and resilient. There I spent many years as a chef and came to reunite with my wife and son in the Galilee, Israel in 2000.

In May 2004, I was suddenly struck down by a near fatal stroke, leaving me partly paralyzed. Life became a completely different ballgame. Rehabilitation was my main focus.
I began by training my hand to paint a straight line and this led to painting simple African designs on clay pots.
I realized that my sense for color was touching people’s hearts and discovered that my creative talent is blossoming.

One day I came across the indigenous marble stone all around me and found it to be an interesting canvas for my work: strong, earthy, and textured. This presentation is a celebration of the prominent role that women have played in my life and the joy I’ve shared with them; colorful, happy and caring. Being brought up by my granny, loved dearly by my mother, encouraged by my wife and the greatest delight of all, my daughter: this is a natural testimony of all things good to me.

The drawings reflect my deep fondness of the ‘girls’, and also evoke the colorful dancing scenes from my childhood in Africa fused together with the Israeli culture and my experiences in the Galilee.

The more I create, the more I enjoy, and hope that you do too.

Unwa Jacobs.
