"Coon-ass" is a common term for a resident of south Louisiana. It can be used in a derogatory manner, but plenty of people in south Louisiana are proud to be coon-asses. The title of this image is a play on the words "coon-ass" and "asshole," both of which figure prominently as subject matter in this image.

Brent Mitchell has been practicing photography for over a decade. Having grown up in southwestern Louisiana, Brent often turns to the small towns and their people as subjects.
Brent currently works as a collections assistant at the Dallas Museum of Art. His master's thesis research focuses on photographs taken in Louisiana by Farm Security Administration photographer Russell Lee. It is entitled "Capturing the Ordinary: Russell Lee in Southeastern Louisiana" and is accessible by visiting docs/available/etd-04062004-154900/.
