This is a beautiful masterpiece made from walnut wood, This carving is all one piece. Most hand carvings are carved separately and then glued together, not this one!. The carving was made from an old walnut tree stump deep in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Sparta, NC. Steven cut the stump off and began his carving, Three years later his masterpiece is complete. It is very hard to imagine that a big block of wood could be shaped into such an exquisite piece of work, signifying the beauty of nature and life with every strike of the chisel. Steven has had many of his pieces displayed in art museums across the US. Perhaps the best place to see them is in the mansions of the satisfied clients that own them. His attention to detail is what sets him apart from other carvers, this piece shows water, rocks, grass, leaves etc. Look at the Pioneer's eyes, one can tell by looking in his eyes what he is thinking. Please understand this carving took three years for the artist to complete the patience of this artist is amazing, and the end result is astounding.
Artists Description Of Carving
The Buckskin clad pioneer is carrying a wooden bucket, he has come to get water. After walking all day this is the only water hole he can find for miles. He sees two deer standing by a stream with grass and shrubbery on the creek banks. He is hiding behind a dead tree watching the deer drink, he is reminded that nature takes care of all creatures on this earth and we all share the same existence no matter what species, color or race.

Born in a valley that time forgot deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Steven Roper began carving at four years old with a pocket knife given to him by his uncle. Steven was raised on a farm in Sparta, NC he also spent allot of his time on the Cherokee Indian Reservation being 1/4 Indian. He was taken in by a family named Walkenstick and stayed with them until he turned 18. As a late teenager he traveled to most fifty states including Canada and Mexico. After traveling the world and developing his carving talents Steven was discovered by a furniture company where he hand carved designs into custom pieces of furniture. The company Steven was working for saw the great talents he pocessed and furthered his training by paying for him to train under a European Master Carver. After 15,000 hours of rigours training Steven was granted status as Master Hand Carver by his European trainer. With his 300 chisels and a master carving bench he creates masterpieces such as this one. With his dedication to his carvings and such a great understanding of life Steven Roper is a great asset to the art world.
