Origins and History
Outsider Art Textile Arts have a fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century. This movement gained momentum in the 1940s and 1950s, with the publication of Jean Dubuffet’s essay "Art Brut" in 1947. The Outsider Art Textile Arts movement emerged in the 1970s, as artists began to explore the possibilities of using fabric and thread to create works of art. Some of the most important figures in this movement include Judith Scott, who created intricate sculptures using found objects and yarn, and Mary T. Smith, who used fabric and paint to create vibrant abstract Artworks. Today, Outsider Art Textile Arts continue to evolve, with artists exploring new techniques and materials to create works that challenge our notions of what art can be.

Notable contemporary Outsider Art Textile Arts

One such piece is "The Dinner Party" by Judy Chicago, created in 1979. The artwork is a large, triangular table set for a dinner party, with each place setting featuring a unique embroidered placemat and a ceramic plate in the shape of a vulva.
