This is a former slave's portrait. She is one of the former slaves interviewed during the 1940's under the Roosevelt plan to put artists to work, The WPA.
This woman is a survivor of the fittest, having lived despite the hardships of slavery and being a descendant of slaves who, also, were survivors.
