Depicting the loss of an art form

Depicting the loss of an art form

An exhibition titled ‘Truth from the margins’ - two series of paintings by Dhanaraj Keezhara, is being held in Alliance Francaise.

The first series show various experiences that reflect the artform ‘Theyyam’, which is performed by the Malabar community in Kerala. ‘‘Theyyam is a dying ritual in North Kerla. I wanted people to be aware of this form of art and the community,’’ says Dhanaraj. The canvases shows trees, animals, and insects co-existing with humans — something that the community live with everyday.

The second series mainly addresses contemporary concerns of the environment and the ecosystem. Some paintings also attempt to portray violence and disharmony, while others show the effect of war and violence on memory and childhood.

‘‘I have picturised children bearing the brunt of modern warfare and terrorism,’’ says Dhanaraj.

In his painting ‘Dreamscape’, the artist has depicted a child sleeping and entering a world of silence and peace — something that is lacking in the real world. Most of his paintings in this series seem to revolve around the theme of loss — loss of rural landscape, loss of peace or loss of childhood. One painting that was really powerful was ‘Old Man and the Hibiscus’. ‘‘In this painting I have tried to potray suffering and a recollection of youth long gone,’’ explains Dhanaraj.
