Attilio Frau si dedica da un lungo tempo alla pittura. Si é diplomato al Liceo Artistico nel 1972 e ha frequentato alcuni anni alla Facoltà di Architettura di Firenze.
Le opere di Attilio Frau mostrano chiaramente come il suo discorso pittorico, iniziato tanti anni fa, si sia fortemente evoluto, sia dal punto di vista della ricerca tecnica, un colore più caldo e più solare con meno uso di tonalità scure che talvolta offuscavano, rendendo meno limpide le tinte, sia nella resa della sintesi poetica, aspirazione primaria della sua espressione artistica.
Il paesaggio assieme a scorci della vechia Cagliari sono diventati i suoi temi preferiti: ad essi dedica molto interesse esaltandone i colori e le immagini, ricchi di genuina freschezza inventiva.
Nelle linee prospettiche il paesaggio, come gli altri motivi del resto, viene trasposto con sintesi grafica essenziale, risolvendosi attraverso pochi e rapidi interventi, senza alcuna indulgenza al lezioso.
Osservando le sue opere emerge chiaramente il bisogno di Frau di liberarsi di legami inutili per approfondire continuamente il lato tecnico e rendere coloristicamente più godibili, nelle diverse scansioni tonali e nelle vibrazioni luminose, le sue tele.
In concreto Frau conferma la validità della sua ricerca pittorica, dalla quale prorompe la vitalità espressiva dell'artista, l'intimo piacere di reagire al messaggio del colore ed alle sinuosità luminose dei piani.
