12 AUSPICIOUS NAMES OF SHRI GANESH AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCES:
8. Dhumra Varna ~ Destroyer of Self Indulgence
In this incarnation the elephant headed god defeated Ahamkarasur, the demon of self-infatuation. According to legends, tired of the rule of Aham, all the deities meditated upon Lord Ganesh for salvation, it was then that the Lord descended to their rescue in the form of Dhoomravarna and killed the demon. His mount in this particular incarnation was also a mouse. ‘Dhumra’ means smoke and ‘varna’ means complexion. Smoke is the transitory state between sagun (Materialised) and the nirgun (Non-materialised). He who possesses such a smoky complexion is known as Dhumravarna. According to the principle of ‘where there is smoke, there is fire’, Shri Ganapati definitely possesses the Fire Principle.
