Twin brothers, painters Avtandil and Tariel Vartagava were born in Georgia in 1935.

Tariel Vartagava (1935-2008) was a painter, graphic painter, icon painter and a poet. He graduated from Tbilisi state universities - journalism and fine arts faculties in 1971, with a major in graphic arts.

For a long time Tariel worked in the Palace of art workers. He also was the author of numerous literature publications in Georgian newspapers and magazines.


Avtandil Vartagava – was a painter, graphic painter, icon painter, poet and art historian. He graduated from Tbilisi state universities history and visual arts faculties in 1971. Avtandil gained significant experience while working in a workshop of the famous Georgian artist Lado Gudiashvili.

From 1966 Avtandil worked as a historian-researcher and artist, in Tbilisi state museum, investigated the cult constructions and a wall-painting in Georgia.

Later in his career he became chief creative designer at the main editorial board on a literary translation and literary interrelations of Georgia.

From the 80th years of the 20th century twin brothers were actively occupied with monumental painting. They painted frescos in several temples in the western part of Georgia.
