La légende rapport que, dans des temps reculés, il y avait en Bretagne des peuples terriblement cruels. Ils étaient si pauvres qu'ils allumaient, dit-on, des feux sur le sentier des douaniers pour tromper les navires, pour provoquer la perdition des bateaux qui voguaient au large. Lorsque ceux-ci coulaient, ils tuaient d'une mort atroce tous les éventuels survivants et rejetaient leurs cadavres à la mer pour mieux s'approprier leurs biens...
Ces légendes sinistres, associées notamment aux côtes du Finistère Nord ou à Ouessant, ne semblent pourtant n'avoir aucune réalité tangible. Aucun document historique, de quelque nature qu'il soit, ne vient confirmer ces légendes. Ainsi, dans l'ensemble des compte-rendus et rapports de naufrages épluchés par les historiens, jamais un capitaine de navire ne dénonce la présence d'un feu découvert au loin pour expliquer la tragédie... Cette légende des naufrageurs bretons n'a donc aucun fondement historique.
