Born in London, England in 1968, Paul Sewell discovered his love for photography at an early age when his father gave him his first camera and was encouraged to “Photograph the less obvious”.

After leaving school Paul got a job as a photographic assistant, working for fashion photographer Steve Cartwright. “I think I got more of an education working as an assistant for two years than any art college could have given me” Paul reveals, “The studio was also available for rent so I got to work with a lot of photographers and see lots of different styles and when it wasn’t in use I could use it for my own work”.

Paul left the studio in 1988 after being awarded a government grant for one year to develop his own photographic skills. Increasingly being asked to add graphics to the images he took, Paul studied graphic design and in 1995 he moved to the United States and worked as an Art Director for a large international company. “I think graphic design really helped me with my photography. There are a lot of similarities between how a page is laid out and how you compose a photograph.” Tired of the corporate lifestyle and constantly wanting to reinvent himself, Paul left to work for a small (8 person) design consultancy.

Paul uses both digital and film cameras; the latter of which is scanned into the computer. The images are then printed digitally onto archive quality paper. Paul now resides in San Diego, California.
