Dangerous Minds Artists

London, United Kingdom
Artist (Sculpture, Printmaking)
Born 1967

Dangerous Minds Artists is a studio founded by Michael Lake-McMillan and Alan Stuart in 2015. The artist's distinctive contemporary pop art works constantly refers to and returns to the touchstones of light, beauty in decay, abandonment and antiquated typography.

Dangerous Minds practice is driven by duality. The pairs’ intuitive subliminal dialogue centers on point and counterpoint and the production of works that are, fundamentally, aesthetically appealing and which, on further inspection, inspire curiosity and cause a ripple of intellectual stimulation. Subject matter is considered in depth, deconstructed then reformulated with an essential duality at its core. Often incorporating ambiguous or cryptic text elements relating to a parallel narrative.

Key to their oeuvre is the juxtaposition of the immediately apparent and that which only becomes visible through physical change – either in the position of the viewer or in the lighting of the work, whether specifically engineered or occurring naturally with the transition of day into night.

Michael Lake-McMillan and Alan Stuart live and work in London, United Kingdom.

Linear Musings... the name refers to the line of cryptic text, at the bottom of each work.

The titles are derrived from a series of poems entitled 'Little Usherette' by Michael Scott, both cerebral and surreal.

The works play on a subconcious nostalgic recognition of the stylised Metallic Damask wall paper motif with the base panels are overlayed with multiple layers of Translucent Lacquers, Resins, Irridescent Powders and Heavy Impasto to the upper sections along with the line of Nickel studs represents the division of the Abstract above and the Emphatic below.

The Baby Blue band at the bottom of the works pays reference to New Birth, whilst simultaneously the Cryptic Text is applied in aluminium funeral wreath lettering, alluding to mortality and the circle of life.

The codified Neon Symbols pay direct reference to the Supporting Text, providing an Ambiguity within their apparant graphic incompletion. An empathetic engagement can take place as the final missing lines are allowed to formulate in the mind of the viewer.
