I first found out I was good with clay in high school. I made a sculpture representing love (two figures, a male and a female hugging) I couldn’t afford to pay my school fees so the school kept my sculpture. And I heard that after I left, the teachers would show it to the other classes, telling them if they tried really hard they could make something as good. This gave me confidence and I realised I was very good with clay. As a young boy I was always very good at drawing. When I was in my early twenties I received a government payout for a car accident I was severely injured in when I was 12yrs. I waisted most of it because I was young and silly, but with my last little bit Thought “ What could I buy that would be a good investment?” So I researched and bought myself a large gas powered kiln for $2500. This turned out to be the best investment I ever made! I played with clay a bit and had fun with my family and friends making cool stuff. Then I decided to go to Tafe in Lismore. And ended up doing numerous certificates and a diploma in ceramics. I liked it so much I kept going back and went for about ten years. My three teachers Malina, Tony and John were a great inspiration for me (I will add their last names) I won a ceramic competition at tafe with a unque sculpture I made. I learned everything I needed to at tafe and have been honing my skills at home. I have developed a connection with the clay and nature, I harness the earths energy by digging my feet into the grass and letting the energy flow up through my body into my hands and into the clay, which is earth itself. I start with an Idea, and the clay always takes on a life of its own and creates itself, with my help. My sculptures always turn out way better than I imagined, and I spend hours admiring them and charging them with more energy when they are completed and at their various stages. I am still on a disability pension from the injuries I received in the car accident when I was a kid, and am trying to get my name out there so I can make some regular money from my skills and support myself. My children love making things with clay and we have regular fun with clay together, they have even contributed to some of my better sculptures, and I told them if the sculptures are sold they get half the money lol. So now I want to show the world my beautiful art and make some money from those who truly appreciate my master pieces and buy them ;)
P.s. My father has been my greatest inspiration an positive influence. In my early years he helped me with many sculptures and did many firings together. Today we still work together creating sculptures side by side giving each other inspiration. Thanks dad!
