IN ENGLISH - Óbidos is one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal. Located in the central region of Portugal and with about 2,200 inhabitants, Óbidos is an authentic history open book to all who move there. In December 2015 UNESCO considered Óbidos as Literary City, part of the Creative Cities Network program.
His story tells us that because the location by the sea, the village of Óbidos, and the surrounding land, was always inhabited, as confirmed a study of the Lower Paleolithic of Outeiro da Assenta. Here the Celtibero castro was formed and it’s known that here the Phoenicians also passed and the Romans settled here.
With a vast heritage of religious architecture and historical-monumental vestiges, in the pass Óbidos was a village of kings and queens. On January 11, year 1148, the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, supported by Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, took Óbidos to the Arabs. Since then Óbidos has become a haven of rest and the tribulations of the court. There were many kings and queens that have passed through here and, in one or another form, left marks that the village still maintains. In resume, the colorful, monumental and mystical village of Óbidos is in fact an authentic open book that holds centuries of history among its walls.
