Alguma história de Alcoutim/Some Alcoutim´s history

(Cf. visitalgarve(doc)pt/ )

Alcoutim is a Portuguese village belonging to the of Faro (Algarve, southern Portugal) with about 900 inhabitants. This small village is home to a municipality composed of 4 parishes, which add more c. 2017 inhabitants (Census 2011), and is limited to the east by Spain. On the banks of the River Guadiana, on the other side of the river and in a full view of this Portuguese village, is Sanlúcar - a small Spanish village that is in constant communication with Alcoutim through a ferry, which transports passengers with the greatest of facilities and provides a frequent and amiable conviviality between the Portugueses and the Spanich people of that region. And by road the distance is 70 Km.
At least since 2500 BC, Alcoutim attracted different peoples because of the deposits of copper, manganese and iron. However, it was the Romans who developed a mining industry in the region, "building access and transporting the metals that the empire needed through the Guadiana to the Mediterranean. This human occupation strongly motivated by mining continued with the Visigoths and the Arabs until 1240, the year in which Alcoutim was reconquered by the Christians, receiving the village charter in 1304, during the reign of D. Dinis.
Given its strategic position, the importance of the village was recognized by the Portuguese crown which, in addition to reinforcing its defensive structures, made the donation of Alcoutim to the Military Order of Santiago.
After the wars of the Restoration, Alcoutim lost strategic importance. This coincided with the decline of mining, which, coupled with the relative poverty of the county's agricultural lands, led to economic stagnation and the resulting desertification that has intensified since the second half of the twentieth century.
