In and Out Photographing Architecture
Exclusive Collection curated by Sonia Perrin | 10 artworks Download as PDF
The history of architectural photography began between 1826 and 1827 with the oldest preserved photograph in the world: "View from the Window at Le Gras," a heliograph by Nicéphore Niépce, its inventor. In the early 19th century, the daguerreotypes used at that time required a long exposure time, leading architecture to become a subject of inspiration that captivated photographers with architectural curves and lines. Photographers documented the construction of the Eiffel Tower, the Paris metro, and New York skyscrapers, capturing the work of famous architects like Le Corbusier and the Bauhaus movement. More recently, "urbex," short for urban exploration, aims to explore abandoned places. The images produced reflect architecture tested by the passage of time. They question human constructions and their ephemeral nature. Throughout the 20th century, photography evolved into a full-fledged art form. While the image often faithfully reproduces the building, the artist's subjective gaze reveals an atmosphere, plays with light, and becomes more abstract. The artist conveys their personal vision of a structure and its architectural elements. It is these perspectives that this selection invites you to discover.
