Funny cat art is an expansive category that depicts everyday household pets in humorous, ironic, or comical situations. These works often dispel the outdated myth of cats as unfriendly, mysterious creatures and show the lovable, affectionate side that many cat lovers understand and appreciate. Many of these pieces are acrylic on canvas, while some are watercolor or ink on paper. The subjects may include various domestic animals such as dogs, cats, horses, ducks, rabbits, parrots, mice, and hamsters. Some other subjects include commercial brands, cartoon characters, foods, flowers, fruits, plants, and insects.
The ancient Egyptian pantheon depicted cats as gods in the sky or in the land. One of my favorite cat art pictures, this one by Picasso, consists of a majestic large painting that represents a fictional cat eating a golden egg. The painting is accompanied by a short quote from Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907): "A cat is my god, and he will give me a feast that surpasses all feasts". This painting symbolizes the artistic connection between man and his pet and was a major contribution to the modern art movement.
Another example of cat art in the form of a Renoir is Jean Hugues Gavarini's painting, Les Diablerets (1908). This work is another example of Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon series where a cat appears to dine on an egg. In the Renoir, the cat has just completed eating its own tail, which signifies the finality of life. Gavarini's work is like an abstract creation, and has a sense of humor in its appearance, despite its macabre overtones. It is, like many of the earlier Renoir masterpieces, simply created as an imaginative work of art.
