Gouache art history is a long tradition that began with tempera-like paints, made from egg yolks, in Ancient Egypt and Greece. The glaze from the egg yolks created a semi-opaque surface that was used by master artists.
Temperas were the primary type of paint in Europe until oil paints became popular in the 16th century. Later, the term "gouache" was applied to a paint that is essentially watercolour but with larger percentages of binder and inert pigments like chalk added to increase opacity.
Artists use the medium in a variety of ways, from using it as a base layer for watercolor to painting with it in mixed media paintings. It's also used as an opaque layer in oil paintings.
Staining: A technique for beginning a painting is to stain the paper with a thin layer of gouache. This will give your painting a soft, blurred texture that feels a lot like watercolor but without the water.
Dry brushing: Another way to add texture to your painting is to pick up a little bit of semi-wet gouache paint with a brush, then swath the dry brush over your painting. This will create a feathered, almost ragged effect that you can use for background or highlights.
Today, gouache is becoming a staple of many modern artists’ techniques. It is prized for its reworkability, vibrant color and opacity, and has become the medium of choice for abstract and contemporary painters like Fieroza Doorsen and Joanne Freeman.
