The latest exhibition at Socrates Sculpture Park explores the themes of athleticism, competition, and game in modern sculptures. Curated by Alyson Baker, the exhibition examines how sport is a metaphor for the human spirit and the role of the spectator. Featured pieces in the exhibit explore the relationship between sport and art and the role that these concepts play in society. There are eleven sub-categories of sport, each featuring different types of sports and the objects that are associated with them.
The exhibition includes a variety of styles and mediums. Many artists use sculptures to convey the idea of sport. Tim Laun's installation focuses on the preparation beneath the airborne football. Lee Walton addresses the physicality of sports by carrying 35 pound weights from a sporting goods store to Socrates. Satch Hoyt and Allison Wiese use sound to evoke heightened emotion and excitement through an aural experience.
Sports are a great context for analysing the human condition. In fact, many artists make sport a central theme in their work. Despite its abstract nature, it reveals how closely the human spirit is linked with sport. In a sculptural piece, a player's facial features are missing, allowing the viewer to focus solely on the movement of their arms and legs.
