Well beyond the traditional Catholic celebration, once associated with the symbolic birth of the sun at the winter solstice, Christmas concentrates a gentle and unique magic. Amid enchanting landscapes, misty mysteries of this winter interlude, festive scenes, warmth of the hearth, and contrasting colors, how does this Christmas magic inspire artists?
Spotted universes, comforting lights
In a spirit close to pointillism, Yerkezhan Kamentayeva opens a window to wonder. At Lucie Postel's and Alya Veresk's, the lights become sources of fantasy and emotion. The light stands out in the full moon of Liza Pennon, or in the illuminated fir trees of Tudor Gafton, Roberto Reb, and Yuliia Khazova. The glow of the fire also plays a major role, particularly in the works of Erealpha and Aleksandra Serova.
In a tone that evokes fairy tale illustrations, the hearth becomes more abstract in the work of Alessio Mariotto. Alexandra Uryasova stages delicate candles placed on a table, while Alisa Diakova prefers more discreet candles.
Gourmet and colorful life scenes
Alone or accompanied, in an apartment or a house, it is nice to isolate oneself and relax. In a comforting living room, like at Marie France Garrigues or Tonjua Lyles, or in a more animal-themed universe at Kristen Olson Stone or Alisa Diakova. The conviviality also offers soothing moments, through the still lifes of Amélie Bourbon, Tony Rubino, Anatolii Rabkov, or Catherine Péré. Libraries finally become refuges for introspection and inner imaginations, particularly at Alida Velea's.
Winter delicacy
Delicacy slips everywhere, in the subtlest forms and the finest emotions. It is born from a feather that brushes the air, from a mountain relief that softens under the light. It is embodied in a graceful posture, like those captured by Ototoi or Young Park. It can be found in a perfectly mastered gesture: the ballerina sublimated by the lens of Olivier Barau, or in the meticulous embroidery of Mónica Silva. It takes the form of an angel at Janka Janny Wagner's, and regains the innocence of childhood at Antonella Preti or Marta Grassi. It even slips into an intimate conversation, whispered through the work of Anna D. Here, delicacy becomes a language: that of the subtle, the tender, and the carefully revealed.
