This art brut embroidered wall hanging is a work from the “Les humeurs de la terre / earth moods” collection. Nature is one of my sources of inspiration and with this series of embroideries I am honoring the earth and its seasons. I appreciate having my hands full of soil and after gardening for a few hours, I had the idea to extend this moment with the needles. So I used burlap and scraps that I washed, stained and layered. The range of tones is natural, and in harmonies from browns to anthracite. Gold ocher dominates in this work. It is the gold of the yellowed leaves which gradually come to line the ground. In the garden, dog and cat were frolicking together, and observing this not necessarily usual and cheerful complicity in the garden inspired me this embroidery. And to question our relationship to the other. What definition do we make of the other who rubs off on the way we interact? Are we immediately hostile to any difference whatsoever? What if we approached the relationship to "the other" with a fresh eye, devoid of judgments, without prior definition? Certainly a key that would allow us to recognize and love how much each relationship enriches us beyond what we are able to imagine. For the realization, I proceeded by piece that I assembled. First I drew the main element of the tapestry, the cat basking on the dog as he does on a hot radiator! And I traced the cat on a scrap of black editor's fabric. Then I created a dog more glamorous than a radiator on a fall. And I embroidered these elements on a jute background dyed in golden ocher. As an embroidery technique, I chose, among other things, the Japanese sashiko patching technique, and embroidered very freely, that is to say without a pattern. I also use different stitches of embroidery. For example the chain stitch is ideal for tracing outlines, the scale stitch, the thorn stitch. I handle these points with freedom, and invent as I go. I then imagined the chick then the fish in the lower part of the hanging. As the embroidery and fabric overlays go on, the scene takes shape. When dyeing the jutes, I did it manually. The natural colors are coffee, tea, walnut stain. Anthracite and ocher are ready-made dyes. Then when the elements of the tapestry are in place and embroidered, I move on to the interlining stage. I mean not here that I put a burlap on the back of the work. This phase is important and tedious. I make small dots in dyed and natural jute threads on every centimeter and in all layers. This step is essential because besides the fact that it brings hold to the hanging, it is also the moment for me to refine and embellish the details.
