Collages ~ Paper

Collage: Paper, Paint, Ink, Ballpoint Pen and Marker on Paper.

To make this work, I have scanned through old diaries, selected drawings and doodles from 1990 to the present, to bring forth the recurrent themes and imagery rooted in my French Catholic background. To make this work, I have scanned through old diaries, selected drawings and doodles from 1990 to the present, to bring forth the recurrent themes and imagery rooted in my French Catholic background. Playing with various myths, with an intense, yet playful feminist perspective, I have pasted and combined these images into a large white corrugated cardboard.
I have also used randomly cut-out fragments of a mix-media collective piece of work created during an art class and reshaped these fragment into pieces evoking the past and the present. One of these fragments became a box representing a TV/computer screen projecting a big brother invasive and threatening blue eye, from wich emerge shapes of bugs and
bones, looking like a see through X-ray imprinted onto the red robe of my first self-portrait. Another fragment became the shape of Sacagawea, and a third evokes the sorrowful half-face of the medusa-like voodoo practitioner, who was the source of the Salem trial. The work is about our past and current Eurocentric beliefs, cultural domination, fear of women and the Other, and tragic encounters. As an artist, I am attempting to bring forth and challenge my own conscious and unconscious internalization of the belief system I grew up with, a system that also created internal conflicts and personal turmoil.
I am offering here simplified self-portraits at three different stages of my life. the first one at 1990 when I was a young hopeful 35-year-old, teaching part time and experimenting with a new art form, in love and engaged to my American sweetheart. The middle one, ten years later, a period of turmoil, and now, wearing the red hat/helmet of mental if not physical vitality, wiser and calmer yet devasted by the present political climate and its surge of Eurocentric entitlement.

J'adore la composition de ce tableau en patchwork. Beaucoup de créativité, de magnifiques couleurs et pour ne rien gâcher, une pointe d'humour et d'auto-dérision. Un grand BRAVO pour ce travail.
