While working on my latest piece via some stream of consciousness, the memory of holding a cast resin reproduction of Lucy’s skull arose. Read More While working on my latest piece via some stream of consciousness, the memory of holding a cast resin reproduction of Lucy’s skull arose. I was taking an elective class at Harvard Extension School in 2012, on human evolution, and during lab time we learned how to handle and distinguish between ancient hominids bones. Lucy’s bones had been unearthed in 1974 in Ethiopia. She was a twelve year-old female, fully developed as an adult, and thought at the time to be the new Eve, and the missing link between apes and humans, the most ancient remain of an ape-human creature 3.2 million old. Lucy was a tiny being three and half feet tall, at a time where the size dimorphism between male and female, negligible in modern humans, were an indicator of male dominance. The naming of Lucy allegedly happened when the exultant team of researchers celebrated their crucial discovery by blasting the Beatle’s song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” I was nineteen when Lucy (also my middle name) happened, and much later in life, I felt moved by holding her fragile, tiny skull even though it was a replica, between my hands.

By now we have a different understanding of human evolution. According to a 2009 National Geographic article written by Jamie Shreeve, and from what I remember from my class, far from being linear, human evolution into Sapiens or the modern human is highly complicated and started six millions years ago. While it was believed at the time of Lucy’s unearthing, that she was the missing link between chimpanzees and humans, there have been more findings that prove that humans are not the direct descendants of chimpanzees, but rather a cousin’s branch, that evolved from a common ancestor. So my latest collage titled “Lucy or the Language of Bones,” was prompted by my musings about what it means to be human, what history bones are telling us and how I can relate my questionings to my art making. This collage will probably evolve into a large or several large scale-paintings.
