Born in 1948 in Brittany, André Michel is a self-taught. During numerous years, he dedicates his spare time to the work of the wood and to the realization of furnitures. These creations, always more demanding, bring him to study various artistic disciplines in a relatively "Classical" register, by respecting scrupulously all the codes of the cabinetmaking. In 1996, he chooses the break and dashes into the determinedly contemporary sculpture by associating his second passion: Sport. It is then a question of working the material, the brass or the bronze, by giving to him a skated depiction varying according to the inspiration of moment.
There is no work in foundry. The sculpture is manually executed. Aqs a consequence each one is unique.
His creations stage subjects in the most meaning postures of the approached discipline. The approach is minimalist, the purified lines, so that the spectator holds only the main part, an impression of fluidity and movement, feeling very often set against the opposition to progress inherent to the sculpture.
Even if the aestheticism stays an essential concern in his work, he leaves only little place with a compromise when it is a question of respecting the technical dimension of every sport.
Through more than about sixty works he approaches a lot of disciplines with a common denominator. All the time, it is above all the effort and the performance of the human being who is advanced, in situations where there is only a very restricted place left with the high technologies and diverse equipments. Here, only the beauty of the movement is taken under consideration.
Recently, André Michel transposes his approach into situations more close to our everyday life but also sometimes reveals more improbable postures, not wishing to lock itself into a register which could be right of its creativity and its collection of the representation of the being in what he expresses of more hardly through a simple sculpture...
