Jeune élève du peintre Fernandez Diaz, Alain Barat commence son activité de dessinateur illustrateur dans la presse à 18 ans.
Après des études d'arts appliqués à Bordeaux, il fréquente l'atelier Lafaye puis l'atelier Pluriel à Bordeaux où il travaille l'anatomie avec des modèles (portrait et nus académiques).
Viennent ensuite des commandes pour le théâtre (réalisation de décors), l'édition (couvertures de romans) et la communication (agences, illustrations pour conférences...).
Le dessin de presse et la caricature prendront également leur place dans ses créations. Il croque parfois, sur le vif, les visages des passants jouant la pose.
Son trait épuré se stylise à la manière des dessinateurs de bande-dessinée. Son goût pour le portrait s'affirme, de même que ses modèles se féminisent.
Guidé par une recherche esthétique, il peint les sentiments et l'humanité universelle de ses modèles.
