Durant le Moyen Age, les habitants voulurent se protéger des envahisseurs barbares et des bandits en faisant construire un village au sommet de la montagne sur le mont Macaron, refuge imprenable qui permettait de scruter l'horizon. Son nom était Châteauneuf de Contes, devenu aujourd'hui Châteauneuf-Villevieille, dont les vestiges fortifiés actuels remontent au IXe et XIIe siècle. L'ancien village médiéval, avec son enceinte fortifiée, et les vestiges du château féodal sur une hauteur de 749 m, tours avec chambres de veille et cachots, créneaux à 2 pointes, enceinte polygonale surplombe la montagne.
During the Middle Ages, the inhabitants wanted to protect themselves from the barbarian invaders and the bandits by building a village at the top of the mountain on Mount Macaron, an impregnable refuge that allowed to scrutinize the horizon. Its name was Châteauneuf de Contes, now Châteauneuf-Villevieille, whose present fortified remains date back to the 9th and 12th centuries. The ancient medieval village, with its fortified enclosure, and the remains of the feudal castle on a height of 749 m, towers with rooms of watch and dungeons, crenels with 2 points, polygonal enclosure overhangs the mountain.
