I employ a process that helps me to gradually discover and develop a sub-conscious theme in the images I produce. These generally begin with random lines in the relationship of which I see a suggestion of form.
Having developed the form(s) I begin to recognize what is happening in the image, a process that continues as I work.
In this process I am discovering consciously what I "recognize" as a potential. So, I think through what I am creating, and the thoughts become well developed, leading to long explanations of often multi-layered concepts or experiential phenomena.
But now and then, no cohesive "story" develops. And that is the case here.
The elements and their settings were all dictates of the interpretive process ... but even I don't know what they mean.
I will fill in detail, selecting color, texture, shading, style, etc., but to stay true to the process, I fight against my own tendency to get too "artsy", applying formulaic solutions derived from "art education".
When this happens, I try not to think of it as a "failure" because, How can you fail when you had no expectation? Instead, I assume that the meaning in this image is just something I am not the one to determine, not yet at least.
I had no sooner posted this image, with all of the above, when I saw a meaning that relates to the context of the times we live in.
The child is besieged by wolves, in a seemingly hopeless situation when into the scene comes an unpredictable factor, an element of hope.
Were I sitting today in the Ukraine or Taiwan, I think I could easily understand the predicament of this child.
Were I sitting in China or Russia today, watching my nation rolling relentlessly toward the rule of the inhumane marching blindly into darkness, I think I could easily understand the predicament of this child.
Living as I do in America, there have been times, and I fear times are approaching, when I have or expect to understand all too clearly the predicament of this child.
What miraculous thing of magic will come along to bring a change and make what seems hopeless change the whole sad desperation of the current dynamic? As I crouch in my tree, it seems as elusive as whatever fairies are, or what power they might have over packs of hungry wolves?
I don't know ... I only hope it will be enough.

Edwin Loftus is an American painter and draftsman born in 1951. His interest in art began at the age of 4 when he decided to draw something real rather than working from his imagination. 

As a child he excelled at drawing and as a teenager he began to experiment with oil painting. In college, he took courses in art and art history and realized that true art had nothing to do with the quality of the drawing or painting, but that it had to have the ambition to push the boundaries and expand the visual experience. 

He also studied philosophy, psychology and history and quickly realized that it was just another art establishment trying to defend its elitist industry and reward system. Their skills were almost non-existent, they knew nothing about psychology, perception or stimulus response, and they were extensions of the belief system that made communism, fascism and other forms of totalitarianism such destructive forces in the world. They literally believe that art shouldn't be available to ordinary human beings, but only to an elite "sophisticated" enough to understand it. 

Edwin Loftus realized that the emperors of art had no clothes, but they were still the emperors. Gifted in art, he worked hard to acquire this skill. So he found other ways to make a living and sold a few artworks from time to time. For sixty years, many people enjoyed his works and some collected them. 

Today, Edwin Loftus is retired. Even if he sold all his paintings for the price he asked, "artist" would be the lowest paid job he ever had... but that's the way it is.  It won't matter to him after he dies. He just hopes that some people will like what he does enough to enjoy it in the future.
