Durga Das
I am from Chettikulangara, a lush green village of Kerala, having indigenous legends and vibrant folk art traditions. Ebullient sequence of our harvest festivals infiltrated into my consciousness reverberating still in me, when I engage in art activities. Surging through the festive crowds with an imaginative mind was my child hood hobby, which trigger my ideas and fantasies. I spent hours under enormous wooden festival chariots ("Kettu kazhcha"), thinking about my ancestors and their art practices with awe. There were rapturous moments of reflex conditions when I follow the palanquin procession of village deity. In summer my friends collects ochre tinted clay from harvested fields and I ,in turn, puzzled them by creating forms having elements of our folk culture.I went college of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram with this lineage and there I encountered with the isms of art. But I was always obsessed with the images of survivals, which hesitated to vanish from my canvas. My first Solo show 'TRINITY' conducted in Jehangir Art Gallery soon after the horrific violence in Bombay made me to do some thing which passify my subliminal mind and an attempt to respond to the transcendent. This is my present destination.

Colourful reflection .FRIDAY REVIEW 24 3 2006 THE HINDU , K.K.Gopalakrishnan
The `Colours of Joy' brought together three artistes with distinct styles.
A week-long painting exhibition called `Colours of Joy,' held under the aegis of Kerala Lalitakala Akademi in Thrissur, gave art lovers a chance to admire the artistic reflections of Murali Nagapuzha, A.T. Durgadas and G. Unnikrishnan. Although the works are very different in style and execution, the three styles were inter-related as they presented various visages of contemporary India. Durgadas, a graduate from College of Fine Arts, Thiruvanthapuram, depicted the artist's rural background and folk beliefs. Colourful streams and strokes dominated by curves made the mythological series, inspired from the folk tradition of his village, Chettikulangara, more captivating.
The painter, an ardent aficionado of Kathakali music, has brilliantly portrayed the late Kathakali musicians Venmoni Haridas and Kalamandalam Hyderali on canvas. The euphonious Kathakali padams sung by the duo have been visually translated through the beautiful images and curves in the background of this painting. The work itself depicts the last scene from the story `Kiratam,' wherein Shiva disguised as Kirata blesses Arjuna after giving him the mighty arrow `Pasupata.' This work was a fascinating blend of myth and realism.
