A new series of multilayered collages that combine elements of pop art, cultural icons, textual fragments, symbols, and classical visual references. These are visually dense, ironic, and at times unsettlingly contemplative pieces, where academic aesthetics intersect with the language of contemporary media. Through bold color, collage, and layering, I aim to reinterpret familiar images and translate them into the visual language of today — emotional, conflicted, and saturated with noise.

"American Gods" is a bold remix of cultural power, where mythological icons descend into the glowing streets of Times Square and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with pop stars, skyscrapers, billboards, and jeans. Classical figures — winged lovers, warriors, ancient gods — are dropped into the heart of American visual language, from Levi’s waistbands to NYPD patrol cars.
This series interrogates the collision between immortality and celebrity, sacred and commercial, past and pop. Are today’s gods carved in marble or printed on billboards? Can mythology survive in the world of 24/7 media, hypersexualization, and corporate dreams?
Vivid and ironic, the works reinterpret both Hellenistic harmony and Warhol’s America, suggesting that contemporary culture is its own Olympus — seductive, chaotic, and brutally iconic.

Underground Stories is a raw and poetic visual diary set in the anonymous space of the metro. In this series, Denis Mikhaylov transforms the subway into a modern stage of human drama, where classical art, post-Soviet reality, and everyday intimacy coexist.
In these compositions, biblical scenes and Renaissance references meet urban solitude, bureaucracy, and exhaustion. The Virgin cradles Christ on a grimy bench. Botticelli’s Venus is handed a citation by a Russian policeman. A lonely passenger stands defiant in his underwear. These images are not surreal — they’re painfully familiar, yet hauntingly mythological.
Mikhaylov’s stark palette, dark contours, and theatrical lighting evoke a sense of suspended reality — as if each scene is frozen between past and present, sacred and banal.

Biography
Denis Mikhaylov is a contemporary Russian artist celebrated for his unique ability to merge painting, collage, and mixed media into visually stunning and conceptually rich artworks. Since then, he has been a prominent figure in the Russian art scene, as a member of both the Moscow Union of Artists and the Moscow Designers' Union.
Mikhaylov's work is characterized by vibrant colors, intricate layering, and a distinctive approach to visual storytelling. Drawing inspiration from global culture, pop art, and postmodernist aesthetics, his pieces often explore themes of identity, globalization, and the interplay between traditional and contemporary values. His artworks are not just visually captivating but also invite viewers to reflect on deeper societal and cultural narratives.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, the London Art Biennale, the Florence Biennale, and twice in the prestigious Venice Biennale. His works are housed in prominent collections, such as the State Russian Museum, as well as private collections across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Mikhaylov has also received significant accolades, including first prize in painting at the London Art Biennale (2015) and recognition at the Biennale Chianciano (2018).
