Local Nature Photography on Display at Green Fields Market

by Mara Bright, member

Cynthia Yackenchick will display her nature photography upstairs in the mezzanine during the month of February. A winner of local photography contests, Cynthia is excited to show her work at Green Fields Market.

Her images record outdoor subjects close to home. With digital camera in hand Cynthia rambles in the woods and along streams and waterfalls, capturing the beauty of the natural world. Cynthia recalls carrying a camera with her all the time, even as a child. When she is outdoors taking pictures, she is, in her words, “totally present, in the moment."

Although she has received no formal training in photography, Cynthia worked as a photographer in malls with Santa and Easter Bunny. She was responsible for opening the shop, setting up the equipment and doing the shots. She's now planning to enroll in an online digital photography course through Greenfield Community College.

An enthusiastic digital photographer, Cynthia refrains from using software to modify her images. She takes a lot of photos of a given subject and chooses the best. She does play with the flash for its effect on lighting.

Many of Cynthia's photographs contain a story. Sometimes a whole day goes into capturing a single image. She relates discovering a tree whose roots formed a heart above the ground. Because she was collecting images for a winter photography contest on a day with no snow, she improvised by enhancing the heart with ice shavings from the nearby Green River.

Cynthia's work will be for sale. She has a website, which shows her work.
