Cheryl Tall

Looking ahead to next year, I will be showing work at the 2016 Strictly Figurative Exhibition, Carter Art Center, Kansas City, MO, in conjunction with the National Conference for the Education of Ceramic Arts. Also in conjunction with NCECA in Kansas City, I will be showing at InCiteful Clay, The Culture Lab at Mid-America Arts Alliance, Kansas City, MO.
And 2015 is shaping up to be a promising year of interesting exhibitions.
Jan. 24-March 6, I will be showing 6 large sculptures at the 2015 AGCA Clay and Glass Invitational, Brea Art Gallery, Brea, CA.
The three year touring exhibition, InCiteful Clay, which is curated by Judith Schwartz, travels next to the Topeka-Shawnee Library

It will also travel to InCiteful Clay, California State University, Carson, CA.
In July 2015, my work will be part of Common Ground: Allied Craftsmen at Gallery 21, San Diego, CA.
I am presently showing paintings in Art Around Town, Petaluma Valley Hospital, Petaluma, CA.

Artikel
Clay sculptor who creates ceramic sculpture with figurative and architectural references. Inspired by Pop Art, Mythology, and contemporary artists such as Viola Frey and Robert Arneson.
Artikel
My sculpture is inspired by personal experiences, a love of ancient art, travel to foreign countries and a lifelong interest in mythology and folk art. My work uses color and a sense of humor to explore modern life.
I’m interested in how things evolve and grow. In my sculpture, human forms merge with the architecture. Eyes become windows, hair becomes a row of shingles, and a head is topped with an animal or architectural shape. Like Greek Janus figures or Siamnese twins, many of my sculptures portray two or more figures in close proximity. The grouping of these figures can symbolize the relationships of husband and wife, siblings, friends, or neighbors.
The expressions on the faces have been described as longing, eager, ecstatic, otherworldly. Perhaps this reflects a search for deeper meaning and a longing to connect with others. When I’m working, the faces come alive under my hands and they give the piece its character.
I use references from classical mythology to portray archetypal situations. Ripe goddess figures combine with tree forms and animal shapes, expressing my desire for the harmonious existance of human beings with each other and with nature. While many of these images are inspired by personal experiences, I’ve found that the viewer can find himself in them.
