Portugal has a long tradition of producing hand painted ceramic tile panels
Our studio in Monte Canelas is a former horse stable which has the space to lay out the raw glazed ceramic tiles on which we paint.

After painting the tiles are fired in our electric kiln to 1020 degree Celsius.

Artistic line

We paint in the naive style as seen throughout the Algarve using old motives or designs. Throughout Portugal decorative ceramic tiles are used widely and on older houses even cover whole of the facade.

We usually border panel work with our own unique scrolls.

We also reproduce 17th century Dutch tile images, first drawing the design and then painting it using cobalt blue ceramic paint. At the height of its colonial power the Portuguese nobility and rich merchants commissioned ceramic painters from the Netherlands to create works of art on ceramic tiles. Many examples can be seen in the Tile Museum in Lisbon as well as palaces and stately homes throughout Portugal.

We have used these tiles extensively around our premises. It not only makes walls more interesting, glazed ceramic tiles are weather proof and eliminate the need to repaint the surfaces covered by the tiles.
