From Here and Far away, Artist's Books, Pages and Paintings, U of A Poetry Center

Exhibition will consist of the artist’s books and mounted pages (12x12" as well as paintings on the subjects of time, transience, immigration, memory, human behavior and place. There will be two kinds of books in the exhibit: mixed media ones using very tactile materials that are reinforcing the content and others printed in editions that mostly derive form the first group or are digitally composed. The books will be shown in glass cases as well as on the wooden counter so the public will have the opportunity to fully experience them. Several "Pages" mounted on the wooden cradled panels will be displayed on the west wall and abstract paintings will be shown on the north wall.

Mail-art-book
An international mail-art and artist books project.
Curator - Mikhail Pogarsky


Concept: In the 60s mail art developed a separate art
direction and at the same time there was a growth of
interest tin the artist’s book. Mail art and artists’ books of
that time developed in the wake of a protest movement
against the commercialisation of art and the dictatorship
of the gallery system. Most mail artists of the 60s worked
with the artist’s book format as well. Some years ago, these
two areas occupied separate niches in contemporary art, but
the point of intersection between them, of course, remains.
Development of a dialogue between mail art and the artist’s
book is the aim of this project.
Practice: The artists create a mail-art message, dedicated
to the artist’s book, or vice versa - make an artist’s book
dedicated to mail-art. All sizes, all techniques
Exposure: The project will be presented at the 8th Moscow
International Artist’s Book Fair (Moscow, Central House of
Artists)

In anticipation of our Poetry Off the Page symposium in May, we want to encourage community to see that poetry isn’t always made up of only words, and we want to highlight the relationship that writers have to artists. Book and paper artists have the ability to work with an enviable palette of artistic materials and techniques—including traditional handicrafts. Think knitting, embroidery, sewing, beading, felting, needlework, stitching, quilting and other myriad possibilities. Combine these techniques and materials with a strong concept, meaningful content or a compelling narrative and we have a new era in the art and fine craft of book and paper.
Come explore how artists are using these crafts in the book and paper arts realm. How do artists utilize these techniques, materials or subjects as a way to round out, illustrate or compliment a central concept? Can we dispel the myth that the handicrafts don’t have any part in meaningful art?”
Uncommon Threads showcases 47 artists from across the United States plus the UK, Canada and Argentina. Featured are 51 finely crafted works, from artist books to broadsides to blank books chosen from 227 works submitted to our call for entries.
