Basma al-Sharif (née en 1983) est une artiste et cinéaste palestinienne basée à Berlin qui travaille de manière nomade entre le Moyen-Orient, l’Europe et l’Amérique du Nord. À travers des films et installations, elle examine des histoires et des conflits politiques qui refont surface de manière cycliques et confronte l’héritage du colonialisme avec des œuvres satiriques, immersives et lyriques.
Basma al-Sharif a obtenu un MFA de l’Université de l’Illinois à Chicago en 2007, a été résidente de la Fondazione Antonio Ratti en 2009 et du Pavillon Neuflize OBC au Palais de Tokyo entre 2014 et 2015. Elle a reçu le prix du jury à la Biennale de Sharjah en 2009, la bourse d’arts visuels de la Fundación Botín en 2010, elle fait partie de la première promotion d’artiste à avoir bénéficié du programme The Consortium Commissions de l’organisation Mophradat en 2018 et est actuellement membre du programme de bourses de recherche artistique de Berlin pour 2022-2023.
Parmi ses principales expositions, citons la 5ème édition de la Biennale de Kochi-Muziris, « Ruttenberg Contemporary Photo-graphy Series » pour l’Art Institute of Chicago, « Modern Mondays » au MoMA, CCA Glasgow, la Whitney Biennial, « Here and Elsewhere » au New Museum, le Berlin Documentary Forum, la biennale de Sharjah et Manifesta 8. Ses films ont été projetés dans des festivals internationaux, entre autres, à Locarno, Berlin, Mar del Plata, Milan, Londres, Toronto, New York, Montréal et Yamagata.
