In 1987, I watched the animated film "The Glass Harmonica" in an underground video salon. The main character in the film was a man in a bowler hat, reminiscent of René Magritte's paintings. I was captivated by this unusual figure.
After the USSR collapsed, censorship disappeared in my country. In 1993, I bought a catalog featuring photographs of René Magritte's paintings. Since childhood, the work of this great Belgian surrealist has inspired me.
For many years, I have tried to decipher the hidden meaning of Magritte's painting "The Son of Man". On February 24, 2022, enemy planes began bombing my city. I realized I could die at any moment from enemy missiles and bombs.
The war changed my life philosophy. I reexamined the religious dogmas of Christianity and the paintings of René Magritte. This led to the idea of creating my painting "The All-Conquering Force". In March 2022, I completed this work. My painting features a man in a bowler hat, akin to those in Magritte's paintings.
Behind this man, to the left, stands Jesus Christ holding a machine gun. In my painting, Jesus Christ symbolizes the Power of Good. To the right stands Lucifer, wearing a bulletproof vest and holding a samurai sword, symbolizing the Power of Evil.
Jesus Christ and Lucifer represent the eternal struggle between the Forces of Good and Evil in the mind and soul of every modern person.
I want viewers of this painting to reflect on their actions and behavior towards others. They should feel the divine power of the human soul, which, through the Forces of Good and Evil, can achieve great feats and accomplishments in all areas of life.
In creating this painting, I was inspired by three works by René Magritte:
"The Pilgrim" (1966)
"The Son of Man" (1964)
"The Man in the Bowler Hat" (1964)

Yet, amidst this eclectic mix, I strive for clarity, eschewing fantastical imagery for more accessible forms reminiscent of Paul Delvaux and René Magritte.
Each painting displayed on this platform bears witness to a tumultuous period in Ukrainian history, painted amidst the chaos of war from March 2022 to November 2023. Despite the constant threat of enemy bombardment, I persevered, drawing inspiration from the adversity of my surroundings. Much like Picasso in wartime Paris, I risked life and limb to produce captivating surrealist works that speak to the resilience of the human spirit amidst conflict.
