PRAYER (2013) Картина - Anar Huseynzadeh

I was born in Baku in 1981, in a family where there were no artists, no brushes, no tradition of drawing. Still, something drew me to images, and by the age of six I was already sketching on any surface I could find. With time, this instinct grew into a methodical, lifelong pursuit. I studied at an art college and later earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in fine arts. But education was only one layer — the deeper transformation came from years of working through the questions that painting raised inside me.

My artistic practice is shaped by the place I come from — the ancient landscape of the Absheron Peninsula and the wider Caucasus, where layers of history, myth, and faith are still visible in everyday life. My work explores the fragile yet enduring space between memory and mystery, past and present. One of the central threads in my painting is the spiritual dialogue between Sufi mysticism and early apostolic Christianity, both of which have left silent yet lasting imprints on my native land. I do not illustrate religion — I seek to capture its quiet residue, its visual language of presence and disappearance.

For me, painting is not about decoration or even representation — it is about inner necessity. I paint to listen, not to speak. I do not claim to continue a tradition; I simply walk through it, in search of what still breathes beneath the surface.
