Ilgvars Zalans is een hedendaagse Letse schilder. Zalans is een van de meest invloedrijke expressionistische schilders in Noord-Europa. Hij werd in de loop van zijn carrière beïnvloed door de Gutai-groep, de Fluxus-beweging en andere moderne kunstactivisten, en is sindsdien meer aangetrokken tot de action-painting-scene. Met zijn live action painting-optredens heeft Ilgvars Zalans sinds 2007 een wereldwijde tournee door 33 landen gedaan.
Zalans geeft er de voorkeur aan om fundamentele, archetypische en universele thema's en motieven in zijn kunstwerken te gebruiken, in tegenstelling tot thema's en motieven die door de samenleving worden beïnvloed. Hij hield nationale en internationale tentoonstellingen van zijn werk, in de Verenigde Staten, Duitsland, Denemarken, Argentinië, Rusland, Japan, China, Indonesië en Zuid-Korea. Bovendien was zijn kunstwerk te zien op Scope Basel, Scope Miami Beach en Art Copenhagen, de Scandinavische internationale kunstbeurs voor hedendaagse en moderne kunst.
