Divided Hearts

Painting, 100 x 148 cm

About this artwork: This painting is one the carved wood series. It consists of two pieces of Cedar wood that have been sliced, dried and treated prior to being carved by the artist and then prepared for painting. The artist uses the whirling technique to express his feelings that after the breakup of a love affair the lovers leave a permanent imprint on one another. This is a metaphor for the shifting political divisions that can develop amongst communities with a common heritage. Gültekin developed the whirling technique as a new style of oil painting. He did this by adapting the forms of traditional Turkish marbling (a water based technique to imprint designs onto paper). The result generates a similar visual effect to marbling although with a very high gloss finish.
