Gültekin Bilge
The Aquarium
2010
Painting, 43 x 175 cm
by Gültekin Bilge©
About this artwork: This painting is one of the first wood series. These artworks are the result of the artist’s idea to break free from the convention of painting within a rectangular frame. The painting is a metaphor for lack of freedom in life. People may think they are free but this perception can be misleading. Like glass in an aquarium they do not see the forces in the world that constrain them. The artist uses the whirling technique to produce portraits that convey different life stages and experiences. He created this new style of oil painting by adapting the forms of traditional Turkish marbling, which is a water based technique to imprint designs onto paper. The result generates a similar visual effect to marbling although the technique is entirely different.
