About this artwork: This painting is one of the Endless Expression Series. The artist uses his whirling technique to create an image that expresses the pain and anguish associated with war. He tries to convey the emotional experience of martyrs and veterans who have found themselves involved in violent conflict. Many of these ordinary people have been prepared to sacrifice their lives so that others can live in freedom. The martyrs gave up their future and the veterans carry the physical and emotional scars with them for the rest of their lives. Gültekin created this new style of oil painting by adapting the forms of traditional Turkish marbling, which is a water based technique to imprint designs onto paper. The result generates a similar visual effect to marbling although the technique is entirely different. This painting is also an early example of the ripple texture.
