The only painting he managed to sell during his lifetime.
RED VINEYARDS IN ARLES
This painting represents the grape harvest in the Arles countryside, probably at Trébon, to the north of the city. This work is remarkable for its colors, in particular for the opposition of complementary elements, and in this sense announces Fauvism.
The Red Vine was exhibited for the first time at the annual Salon of the XX group in 1890 in Brussels. It was sold there, and that just a few months before Van Gogh's suicide, for the sum of 400 francs (which would correspond to 800 or 850 € today) to Anna Boch, impressionist painter, member of the XX and patron of Belgian art. Anna Boch is the sister of Eugène Boch, impressionist painter and friend of Van Gogh who had painted his portrait (Le Peintre aux Étoiles) in Arles during the autumn of 1888.
It was acquired by Russian art collector Sergei Shchukin in 1906 when Anna Boch's collection was dispersed. As Shchukin's collection was nationalized by the Bolsheviks, the canvas was deposited in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
